EPCSA Braamfontein Parish Celebrates 150 Years of God's Grace

Updated: Apr 19

On Sunday, 13 April 2025, the EPCSA Braamfontein Parish joyfully celebrated the 150th Jubilee Anniversary of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa (EPCSA). Held at the parish’s Vrededorp church in Johannesburg, the day was a beautiful blend of reverence, reflection, and vibrant celebration — honouring a church that has stood strong in faith for a century and a half.

The day was thoughtfully divided into two sessions, each with its own unique spirit and purpose.

The morning began with a powerful worship service, where congregants gathered in worship and thanksgiving. Rev. TDY Sombhane delivered a stirring sermon that spoke to the heart of the Jubilee theme. He preached about entering into a new covenant with God — one that carries the power to break generational curses and free believers from the shame of past mistakes. His message was a call to spiritual renewal and restoration, and it deeply moved everyone in attendance.

The second session shifted into a more celebratory tone, honouring the legacy and journey of the EPCSA over 150 years. This part of the day was kicked off by a soulful performance from the Madodana choir, whose music immediately lifted the energy and set the tone for what was to follow.

Miss Xiluva Maphophe delivered a beautifully crafted poem that traced the roots and progress of the EPCSA, reminding all present of the rich legacy and unwavering faith that has defined the church’s journey.

Music continued to be a central part of the celebration, with powerful and spirited performances from the church choir, the Sunday School choir, and the youth choir. Each group brought their own flavor and passion, capturing the joy and pride of the moment. A special and heartwarming highlight was the performance by the old youth choir — former members of the Youth Guild from 2001 to 2015. Their item blended nostalgia and celebration, reconnecting generations and celebrating the continuity of ministry through the years.

Throughout the day, the congregation was blessed with words of encouragement and congratulatory speeches from various church leaders, all of whom celebrated EPCSA’s legacy and prayed for its future. The festivities concluded with a delightful indulgence in traditional cuisine — a feast that brought everyone together in joyful fellowship, laughter, and shared memories.
