Mamelodi, Gauteng – 7 June 2026
The Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa (EPCSA), Rt. Rev. Adv. SPH Nyambi, visited Mamelodi Parish on Sunday, 7 June 2026, to participate in the Men's Guild Robing Service, a significant occasion in the life of the congregation and the wider church.
The service witnessed the robing of several new members into the Men's Guild, including former Gauteng Premier, Mr David Makhura. Mr Makhura becomes the second former provincial premier to be robed into the EPCSA Men's Guild, following former Limpopo Premier Mr Cassel Mathale, who was previously robed into the guild.
In his address, the Moderator congratulated the newly robed members and commended Mamelodi East Parish for its commitment to serving the surrounding community. He specifically praised the parish's outreach programme, through which members of the community are regularly invited to the church for meals and fellowship.
While acknowledging the importance of charitable initiatives, the Moderator challenged the church to deepen its response to poverty.
"The poor are hungry every day," he said. "While charity remains an important part of the church's mission, we must go beyond charity and begin to ask the question: Why are the poor hungry?"
The Moderator emphasised that understanding the root causes of poverty would enable the church to engage more meaningfully in addressing the social and economic conditions that keep many people trapped in hardship. He encouraged the church to continue providing relief to those in need while also participating in efforts that seek lasting solutions to poverty and inequality.
The service was marked by worship, fellowship, and celebration as the congregation welcomed the newly robed Men's Guild members and reflected on the church's calling to be both a compassionate and transformative presence in society.
The EPCSA congratulates all the newly robed members and thanks Mamelodi Parish for its faithful witness and commitment to serving both the church and the broader community.
