The 42nd Synod was a historic event for the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa (EPCSA). After 30 years of division, the church, which was once split into two groups—the EPCSA (Establishment) and the EPCSA - Standing For The Truth Movement, has now reunited as one body under the name of the EPCSA. This unification, brought about by the 42nd Synod at Bhuba Lodge in the Soutpansberg Presbytery, is a testament to the power of the Holy Spirit and the enduring strength of faith in the face of division.
For three decades, these two groups operated independently, causing rifts within the Body of Christ. However, inspired by the Holy Spirit and guided by God’s Word, the Synod, held from October 4-6, 2024, unanimously resolved to bring an end to this division, symbolizing a new beginning for the Church. This decision was made with deep contrition and acknowledgment of the pain and wounds caused by the split.
The Moderator of the Church, Rt. Rev GS Moyane, and the General Secretary, Rev TDY Sombhane, together with the leaders of the erstwhile Standing For The Truth Movement, led the entire Synod in a public confession. They acknowledged the invaluable work of the Holy Spirit in the ministry of the EPCSA throughout this difficult period and expressed regret for the scandal and shame the division had caused. The confession was a moment of collective healing, a recognition of the past, and a declaration of hope for the future.
The Synod's declaration reflects the heart of Jesus' prayer in John 17:21: “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” With these words, the 42nd Synod committed the Church to unity, resolving that from this moment onward, there is no longer a divided EPCSA. There is now only one Church—one EPCSA, united in purpose, mission, and spirit.
This unification is a call to action for all members of the EPCSA. It is a time to celebrate the healing of past divisions and to embrace unity with thanksgiving. Whether in private devotion or public service, the Church is called to live out this newfound unity in both words and deeds.
As we look to the future, the EPCSA stands stronger, united in its mission to empower and spiritually uplift God's people across South Africa. This moment marks the beginning of a new chapter, filled with hope, renewal, and commitment to the service of Jesus Christ.
Let us rejoice and give thanks for this historic moment of unification, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the EPCSA moves forward as one body, filled with love, strength, and a renewed sense of purpose.
One Way! One Heart! One Church!
